If you've been dealing with stubborn breakouts, congestion, blackheads or those tiny little bumps that never seem to go away, you might be blaming your hormones.

Or your diet. Or stress.

And while those things absolutely matter, there's one cause that often gets overlooked: Your skincare, make-up and hair care.

I see this all the time. Women spend hundreds on skincare, facials and supplements trying to heal their skin, while unknowingly applying products every day that may be contributing to congestion.

The frustrating part?

Many of these products are marketed as "healthy", "natural" or even "acne-friendly".

I remember once being in Space and K and looking at a concealer that said “non-comongenic” and “non pore-clogging” and after checking the ingredients it had not 1, not 2 but 4 pore cloggers!

So how do you know if your skincare could be working against you?

Here are 7 signs your skincare may be clogging your pores.

1. You Have Tiny Bumps That Never Fully Come To A Head

One of the biggest signs of congestion is the appearance of tiny flesh-coloured bumps, particularly around the forehead, cheeks, chin and jawline.

These aren't always traditional pimples.

Instead, they often look like texture beneath the skin that never fully surfaces.

When pores become blocked with oil, dead skin cells and certain ingredients, these bumps can form and linger for months.

If your skin feels rough rather than smooth, your products may be contributing.

2. Your Skin Has Gotten Worse Since Starting A New Product

This sounds obvious, but many people ignore it.

If your skin was relatively calm before introducing a new moisturiser, SPF, foundation or serum and then suddenly becomes congested, pay attention.

Not every breakout is a "purge."

True purging is usually associated with ingredients that increase cell turnover, such as retinoids or exfoliating acids.

Many other products simply aren't compatible with your skin.

If congestion appeared after introducing something new, that product deserves a closer look.

3. Your Breakouts Are Mostly Closed Comedones

Closed comedones are those small white or flesh-coloured bumps that sit underneath the skin.

They're one of the classic signs of clogged pores.

Unlike inflamed acne, they often don't feel painful.

They simply create uneven texture and stubborn congestion.

If your skin is covered in tiny bumps rather than inflamed spots, pore-clogging ingredients may be playing a role.

4. You're Breaking Out In The Same Areas Repeatedly

Does your forehead always feel congested?

Does your chin constantly have bumps?

Do your cheeks never seem completely clear?

When pores repeatedly become blocked in the same areas, it can indicate something in your routine is contributing to the issue.

However, I will say, breaking out in the same place can also be a reflection of your organs and what they’re trying to communicate.

This is especially common with rich creams, makeup products and SPF formulas that don't suit acne-prone skin.

5. Your Skin Feels Greasy But Dehydrated

One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that oily skin needs no oil. Less hydration makes your skin want to produce more oil, causing MORE congestion.

When pores become blocked, skin can look shiny while still feeling dehydrated underneath.

The result?

Greasy skin that somehow never looks healthy or balanced.

Thats why we created the Inflammaging Skin Solution to give you a gorgeous glow without feeling greasy or heavy.

6. Your SPF Feels Heavy, Sticky Or Suffocating

This is one of the biggest reasons I personally struggled with SPF for years.

Many traditional SPF formulas are incredibly heavy.

They're designed to sit on the skin for long periods of time, but for acne-prone skin that can sometimes feel overwhelming.

If your SPF leaves your skin feeling coated, greasy or congested, it may be worth exploring acne-safe and non-comedogenic alternatives (like ours).

One of the reasons we created SPF NOTOX was because I wanted something that felt like skincare, not sunscreen.

Weightless. Comfortable. Easy Under make-up. Non-comedogenic.

And suitable for everyday wear.

7. You're Using "Natural" Products And Assuming They're Automatically Better

This one surprises people.

Just because something is natural doesn't automatically mean it works for every skin type.

Many plant oils, butters and waxes can feel beautiful on the skin but may not suit acne-prone individuals like:

  • Coconut Oil - Rich and highly occlusive, coconut oil is one of the most common ingredients associated with clogged pores in acne-prone individuals.
  • Wheat Germ Oil - Nutrient-dense but very rich, making it potentially problematic for congestion-prone skin.
  • Cocoa Butter - Deeply nourishing but can feel too heavy for some acne-prone skin types.
  • Avocado Oil - Excellent for dry skin but may be too rich for those prone to congestion and breakouts.
  • Algae Extract (Certain Types) - Some forms of algae and seaweed extracts have been linked to congestion in acne-prone skin.
  • Shea Butter - A favourite in natural skincare, but some acne-prone individuals find it too occlusive, particularly in leave-on facial products.

Check if any of your skincare, make-up or hair-care have some of them!

Everyone's skin is different. What's important isn't whether an ingredient is natural or synthetic for this. It's whether it works for your unique skin.

How To Check If Your Products Could Be Contributing

If you're struggling with congestion:

  • Review your moisturiser
  • Review your SPF
  • Review your makeup
  • Introduce one new product at a time
  • Pay attention to patterns
  • Look for products specifically designed for acne-prone skin

Most importantly, don't assume every breakout is hormonal. Sometimes the answer is sitting right there in your bathroom cabinet.

Acne-Prone Skin Still Needs SPF:

One thing I learned during my own skin journey is that many women stop wearing SPF altogether because every SPF they've tried breaks them out.

The problem? Clear skin still needs protection. Because protecting your skin shouldn't mean sacrificing clear skin.

That's why when we created SPF NOTOX, we made acne-safe and non-comedogenic formulation a priority.

  • No heavy finish.
  • No white cast.
  • No pore-clogging feeling.

Just daily protection designed for real life.

Because the best SPF isn't the one sitting in your bathroom cabinet. It's the one you actually wear.

If your skin feels constantly congested, don't automatically assume you need stronger treatments.

Sometimes the answer isn't adding more products. It's removing the ones that aren't serving you.

Healthy skin isn't about having the most complicated routine. It's about having the right one that works for you!
